Back in 1980 I was 12 years old; this was my first experience at making a driveway gate with my dad.
I remember welding with an old oil cooled stick welding machine which was constantly tripping the power as it drew too much current and so when we welded one of us had to stand on a chair in the passage and keep on flicking the switch back up, eventually on the lowest connection and doing short welds we overcame that issue most of the time and managed to work trip free, the inverter welding machines, mig and tig welding machines of today are much easier to work with and weigh a lot less.
This was also my first experience at getting arc eye and I quickly learnt that you have to always wear the helmet when welding or look away when someone else was welding; the helmets were not like the helmets of today with auto control and one had to lift up the visor when not welding and put it down before starting each weld.
The 80s was a very difficult time economically and my dad got retrenched and was unemployed for a long period and so we made a few gates similar to this for other people so we could have some money to buy food.
This gate is now over 40 years old as of 2021 and still stands today. It is special to me even after making 100s of driveway gates over the years and a reminder of my late father.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
